Founder - Sam McCardel
Sam McCardel, born in Melb in 64, left GGS in 81, read Commerce at Tas Uni then Melbourne, enjoyed IV debating & ski trips before traveling Europe. After a brief stint in National Australia Bank in Treasury and then in Touch Ross in Insolvency, his life dramatically around 1990, his father Ken McCardel was admitted to hospital for a knee replacement operation that failed and resulted in 10 successive “general anaesthetic” operations and Ken having his knee arthridised (fused). This changed Sam’s life.
For the next seven years Ken was bound to a wheelchair with Cherry (Mrs. McCardel) and Sam, being Ken’s prime carers. His sister, Louise, was living abroad in Turkey at this time. About this time Sam’s grandfather also passed away. Assuming many family responsibilities, Sam undertook management of family commercial & residential property holdings, management of their small family farm “Malabar”, the sale of his father’s successful accounting practice and retired Ken on a higher income than when he was working.
Bringing the family into the 1990s, Sam undertook various property developments and share portfolio management for the remainder of the decade. In 2001 he accepted a position with Deutche Bank in private banking before deciding to travel again and more recently set up the Whroo Polo Club, a passion of his, whilst at the same time tending to family affairs.
The success of the annual event – the Bush Polo Weekend – has enabled him much time to spend at “Malabar” – the rustic family retreat from Melbourne and the urban life. Sam runs an annual Charity Christmas Cocktail Party supporting the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and other deserving charities, such as local community groups around the farm.
